These Terms of Use (“Terms”) govern your use of Geist (“Geist”, the “App”, or the “Software”). By downloading, installing, purchasing, or using Geist, you agree to these Terms.

If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use Geist.

1. About Geist

Geist is a macOS utility designed to make unlocking your Mac more convenient by using the Mac’s built-in camera to recognize an enrolled user.

Geist does not replace macOS authentication, your login password, Touch ID, FileVault, or any other security mechanism provided by Apple. The standard macOS authentication methods remain available and remain the underlying authentication mechanisms of your Mac.

Geist should be treated as a convenience utility, not as a security product or a replacement for hardware-backed biometric authentication systems.

2. System Integration and Private APIs

Geist integrates deeply with macOS. Some functionality may rely on undocumented, private, unsupported, or otherwise non-public Apple APIs, frameworks, system behavior, interfaces, or implementation details.

These interfaces are not guaranteed by Apple to remain available or behave consistently between macOS versions.

As a result, a macOS update may temporarily or permanently break, restrict, change, or disable parts of Geist without prior notice.

We may attempt to restore compatibility where reasonably possible, but we cannot guarantee that every feature will continue to work on future versions of macOS.

You acknowledge and accept this technical limitation when using or purchasing Geist.

3. Face Recognition and Authentication

Face recognition is probabilistic and is not guaranteed to be correct in every situation.

Performance may vary depending on factors including lighting, camera quality, positioning, appearance changes, occlusion, environmental conditions, hardware, and software configuration.

Geist may fail to recognize an authorized user. It is also possible that a face recognition or anti-spoofing system produces an incorrect result.

Geist therefore makes no guarantee that its face recognition provides security equivalent to Face ID, Touch ID, or other hardware-backed biometric authentication systems.

You remain responsible for choosing an appropriate security configuration for your Mac.

4. Your macOS Password

Certain Geist features may require access to your macOS login credentials in order to perform an unlock.

Geist is designed to store sensitive credentials using security mechanisms provided by macOS and to process authentication locally on your device.

You are responsible for maintaining the security of your Mac, your macOS account, and your credentials.

Geist will never ask you to disable FileVault or remove your normal macOS password in order to use the App.

5. Privacy and On-Device Processing

Geist is designed around local processing. Face recognition and related biometric processing are performed on your Mac.

Your enrolled face data stays on your Mac and is never uploaded for recognition.

6. Permissions

To provide its functionality, Geist may require macOS permissions such as Camera, Accessibility, Input Monitoring, or other system permissions.

The exact permissions required may depend on your macOS version and the features you enable.

You may revoke these permissions through macOS. Doing so may cause some or all Geist functionality to stop working.

7. Software Provided “As Is”

To the extent permitted by applicable law, Geist is provided “as is” and “as available.”

We do not guarantee that Geist will always be available, uninterrupted, error-free, compatible with every Mac or macOS release, or suitable for every particular purpose.

In particular, because Geist may depend on private or unsupported macOS functionality, continued compatibility with future macOS releases cannot be guaranteed.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits statutory rights, warranties, remedies, or liability that cannot legally be excluded or limited under applicable law.

8. Updates and Compatibility

Geist may receive updates that add, modify, or remove functionality.

Updates may be necessary following changes to macOS.

We do not guarantee support for every past or future version of macOS or every Mac model.

Where reasonably necessary for compatibility, reliability, security, or technical reasons, features may be changed or discontinued.

9. Purchases, Licenses and Refunds

A Geist license grants you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use the Software according to the license terms presented at the time of purchase.

You may not resell, redistribute, sublicense, or commercially distribute Geist unless explicitly permitted.

Pricing, device limits, trial periods, update eligibility, and refund conditions are those communicated on the Geist website or during checkout at the time of purchase.

Any mandatory consumer rights under applicable law remain unaffected.

10. Acceptable Use

You may not intentionally use Geist to gain unauthorized access to another person’s Mac or account.

You may not use Geist in violation of applicable law.

Except where permitted by applicable law, you may not circumvent licensing mechanisms or redistribute modified or unlicensed copies of Geist.

11. Third-Party Software and Services

Geist may contain or interact with third-party software, frameworks, libraries, services, or technologies.

Those components may be governed by their own licenses and terms.

Apple, macOS, Mac, Touch ID, and Face ID are trademarks of Apple Inc. Geist is an independent product and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or approved by Apple Inc.

12. Limitation of Liability

To the extent permitted by applicable law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages resulting from the use of, or inability to use, Geist.

This includes, where legally permissible, losses resulting from software incompatibility, failed recognition, unintended recognition, system changes, interrupted availability, or changes made by Apple to macOS.

Nothing in these Terms limits liability where such limitation is prohibited by applicable law, including applicable mandatory consumer protection rights.

13. Changes to Geist

Geist is actively developed and may change over time.

Features, system requirements, supported hardware, integrations, and technical implementations may be modified, replaced, or removed.

Descriptions, screenshots, previews, beta functionality, or roadmap information do not constitute a guarantee that a particular feature will remain available indefinitely.

14. Changes to These Terms

These Terms may be updated when Geist, applicable law, or our business practices change.

The current version will be made available on the Geist website together with its effective or last-updated date.

Where required by applicable law, material changes will be communicated appropriately.

15. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany, without prejudice to mandatory consumer protection provisions that may apply in the country in which you reside.
